Rating a "Close Encounter"
For those of us who loved the movie "Close Encounters of the Third Kind", but never really knew what the title actually meant.  Here is a quick run down of the Close Encounter Ratings.

Close Encounter
of the

FIRST KIND
A "Close Encounter of the FIRST KIND" is when you observe an UFO (Unidentified Flying Object".  This can include strange lights, a craft, etc that you cannot associate with a "earth-made" craft.

Close Encounter
of the
SECOND KIND
A "Close Encounter of the SECOND KIND" is when you not only observe a UFO, but you also witness to physical effects left by the UFO, including damage to the area (landing site) or other physical effects as well as possible effects to the witness including paralysis, blindness, etc.

Close Encounter
of the
THIRD KIND
A "Close Encounter of the THIRD KIND" is the term made famous by the 1977 classic starring Richard Dreyfuss.  A close encounter of the third kind is when you actually witness an extraterrestrial being.

Close Encounter
of the
FOURTH KIND
A "Close Encounter of the FOURTH KIND" is the term applied if a human reports he or she has been abducted by extraterrestrials.  A great example of this category was the famous 1961 report of abduction of Barney and Betty Hill.  This is a very intriguing case to research and was also made into a movie "The UFO Incident" starring James Earl Jones.
